Principle of Sandblasting with Garnet Sand and Steel Grit

Garnet sand and steel grit are widely used in the sandblasting field to clean the workpiece surface and improve its surface roughness. Do you know how they work?

sandblasting

Working principle:

Garnet sand and steel grit, with compressed air as power (the output pressure of air compressors is between 0.5 and 0.8 MPa commonly) to form a high-speed jet beam sprayed to the surface of the workpiece to be processed, causing the surface to change in appearance or shape.

Working process:

The high-speed-sprayed garnet sand and steel grit impact and cut the surface of the workpieces like many tiny “knives”. The hardness of abrasives is usually higher than workpiece material to be blasted. During the impact process, abrasives such as garnet sand and steel grit will remove various impurities such as dirt, rust and oxide scale, etc, and leave tiny unevenness on the surface , that is, a certain degree of roughness.

Working effect:

1. The change in surface roughness caused by high-speed sandblasting of garnet sand and steel grit helps to increase the surface area and improve the adhesion of the coating . Good surface roughness can make the coating adhere better and prolong the wear resistance ,reduce the risk of coating shedding and help the leveling and decoration of the coating.

2. The impact and cutting action of garnet sand and steel grit on the workpiece surface will also leave a certain residual compressive stress , thereby changing the mechanical properties and helping to improve the fatigue resistance and extend the service life of the workpiece.
